The existing driveway, in dire need of repair, lacks proper drainage and weed control. To rejuvenate it, we'll employ heavy-duty equipment and a grid system that promises durability and weed prevention.
Preparing the Site
- Assessing the Condition: The existing driveway is examined for necessary repairs and improvements.
- Renting Equipment: A stand-behind Track Loader with various attachments, including an 18-inch diameter augur bit and a 200 lb plate compactor, is rented for the project.
Excavation and Ground Preparation
- Excavation: The front portion of the driveway, especially where it meets the asphalt, is recessed at least 4 inches to accommodate crushed rock and ensure proper footing for the grid system.
- Compaction: Soil and existing crushed rock are compacted using the plate compactor to ensure stability and prevent shifting over time.
Weed Barrier Installation
- Installing Weed Barrier: A heavy-duty polypropylene landscape fabric is laid over the entire driveway to prevent weed growth. It's overlapped by 3 to 4 inches and secured with landscape nails every 5 feet.
Adding Crushed Rock
- Pouring Crushed Rock: Approximately 12 to 15 yards of 5/8-inch crushed rock is spread over the weed barrier to a depth of 1 to 2 inches.
Grid System Installation
- Grid System Introduction: The VAND Easy Pave grid system, made of 100% recycled plastic, is introduced. Each panel is 24 inches by 16 inches with a depth of 2 inches.
- Assembling the Grid: Panels are snapped together in rows, ensuring proper alignment and stability. Stakes are used to secure the front row in place.
- Pouring Crushed Rock over Grid: Crushed rock is poured onto the grid system, with a rake used to distribute it evenly.
Compaction and Final Touches
- Compaction: The entire surface is compacted using the plate compactor, ensuring the rock is firmly settled.
- Smoothing and Leveling: High spots are knocked down, and low spots are filled in using formwork and a track loader.
- Cleaning Up: Excess fabric and rock along the driveway edges are trimmed using a utility blade or torch.
Transforming the driveway using a grid system not only enhances its strength and durability but also improves its aesthetic appeal. The meticulous process of excavation, ground preparation, and installation ensures a long-lasting and visually appealing driveway that adds value to the property.
With attention to detail and the right equipment, any DIY enthusiast can achieve similar results, creating a beautiful and functional space for years to come.
